Moving to a new property can be stressful and nerve-racking, and often, you forget the excitement that a new home can bring when you’re too focused on getting packed. It’s not uncommon to accidentally leave things behind or only run out of precious time to relocate. To help ease your mind, here are a few bits of moving advice:
1. Plan Ahead
Before you start packing your things and renting the moving truck, sit down and plan every step of the process. Calculate how much time you need to pack the moving truck, how much time you have for the entire move, and the costs of moving. Whenever possible, also make a list of supplies you will need to purchase.
2. Get What You Can For Free
Moving in and of itself can be expensive, especially when you opt to purchase all of the supplies. Before you start buying boxes, look on Craigslist and check out local stores to see if you can get boxes for free. Don’t forget to check with friends and family to see if they may have some supplies they don’t need! Packaging tape is something you will need to buy, but bubble wrap can be skipped for the most part if you have linens or old blankets you can use for wrapping.
3. Get Rid Of Excess Junk
Things you no longer use or don’t have a purpose in your home should be donated or sold. It’s not worth the effort, time or money to pack up the things you don’t see as important. Not to mention, you’re paying for the size of the truck as well as packing materials.
4. Storage Units Can Help
If you have only a day or two to move out of your apartment, consider renting a storage unit where you can quickly leave your things for the time being. You only really need the storage unit for a month so you can properly pack things up and transport them to your new residence.
5. Label Everything
Never forget to label all of the boxes you’re taking with you! It may seem like the most obvious thing in the world, but you’d be surprised how many people can forget. When labeling your boxes, always use a waterproof pen or marker and make sure to label the side that’s going to be facing you in the stack.
6. Get Help With Heavy Lifting
Furniture, appliances, and certain boxes may be too heavy for you to lift on your own. In these cases, make sure to hire professionals to pack your moving truck or ask a friend or family member for help. For moving boxes, you should use a dolly as it makes it easy to stack boxes without bearing all of the weight on your own.
Moving is by no means going to be an easy process. It can appear like a simple process, but you’d be surprised by how many people forget the valuable tips discussed above!
