Moving is challenging even if you’re only going a few streets away. If you’re moving to an entirely new state, your move will be even more difficult. You’ll need to make sure that you are fully prepared for the things that lie ahead.
Thankfully, moving doesn’t have to be a huge source of stress. If you plan ahead and follow the right tips, you should be able to get through your move without breaking a sweat.
1. Start Planning Early
The earlier you start planning your move, the easier it will be. Start working on your move as soon as you know that it’s going to be happening. Even if your planned moving date is half a year away, you should be able to get a lot done.
For example, you can start making phone calls and figure out how you’re going to find a new place. You can get calls from moving companies and determine what your move should cost you. You can start gathering boxes and supplies so that you’re ready to pack up your things when the time does arrive. You can decide if you’ll need to sell some of your possessions, or put them into storage.
Don’t put off any moving-related task that can be done today. The sooner you get started, the less stressful the actual day of your move will be.
2. Get Organized
When you’re moving across the country, you can’t just jam your items into a box and call it a day. You need to make sure that you stay as organized as possible. You need to be able to find the things you need when you need them.
It’s a smart idea to start organizing your items before you start packing them. That way, you’ll be able to sort them into the appropriate box. When a box has been fully packed, label it carefully, writing down both the type of items the box contains as well as the room the box should go in. For example, silverware could be marked as “Kitchen: Silverware.”
If you carefully pack all your items, unpacking should be a breeze.
3. Pack A Travel Bag
You’re not going to be ready to unpack on the first day of your move. You will have probably spent hours in the car, driving towards your new home.
Make sure you pack a travel bag that has everything you need for your first few days. Take clothing, basic toiletry items, and anything else you might like to have on your early moving days. You might want to pack a book you can read or a small portable lamp.
When you have a travel bag, you can relax and unpack at a pace that makes sense to you.
If you follow these interstate moving tips, you should be able to ensure that your move goes smoothly. No one would ever say that moving across the country is easy, but there are a lot of things you can do to make it less difficult.
